Onboarding our first venues in the US and Australia

The payments tax
Most POS companies make their money on your card fees.
The software looks cheap. Then you find out you have to use their processing, the hardware is on a multi-year contract, and leaving costs you. That markup is a tax on every sale you make.
The usual deal
- Use our processing, or you can't use the POS
- Rates on a quote, not a pricing page
- Hardware on a lease or multi-year contract
- Early termination fees when you leave
- Surcharge programs that push fees onto guests
Tallo
- Bring your own processor on any plan, no penalty
- Every rate published, down to interchange-plus
- Runs on affordable Android tablets
- Month to month. Cancel anytime
- Surcharging off by default, with state rules built in
Quick estimate · US rates
Toast Traditional · Basic vs Tallo Pro, in-person cards, $28 average check. Published rates only.
The product
Built for a Friday night rush, not a sales demo.
Every screen is designed for wet hands, bad wifi and a line out the door. Big targets, no pop-ups stacked on pop-ups, and it keeps working when the internet doesn't.
Pay, split and tip without the awkward pause
Split by seat, by item or evenly. Tip presets that suit US service, a guest-facing flip, and Tap to Pay right on the tablet. Surcharging stays off unless you turn it on.
- Tap to Pay on Android
- Open tabs with card pre-auth
- Sales tax or GST, worked out for you
The whole floor at a glance
See who's seated, how long they've been there and what they've spent. Tables that need you go orange — a check request, food running late.
- Merge and move tables
- Covers, turn times, spend
- Patio and rooms
A kitchen display that keeps up
Tickets fire to the right station the moment you send. Timers turn orange when a ticket runs late. Bump with one tap.
- Stations and routing
- Late colouring and averages
- Dine in, to go and online in one queue
Everything else
The boring stuff, done properly.
Keeps trading offline
Every action saves on the device first and syncs when you're back online. You never lose a sale.

Questions owners ask
Do I have to use Tallo Pay?
No. Tallo Pay is there if you want a simple published rate, but you can bring your own processor on any plan. We don't charge more or lock features if you do.
What hardware do I need?
An Android tablet or phone with NFC. Tap to Pay works on the device itself, so you don't need a card reader to get started. If you want them, add a Stripe Reader S700 or WisePOS E, and any network ESC/POS receipt printer. You buy hardware outright — there's no hardware contract.
Why Android?
Android tablets cost much less than iPads, they're easy to replace when one gets dropped in the dish pit, and they support Tap to Pay. Building for one platform keeps Tallo simple and reliable.
Is there a contract?
No. Plans are month to month and you can cancel anytime. Your data exports to CSV whenever you want it.
What happens when the internet goes down?
Tallo keeps trading. Orders, tickets and cash sales are saved on the device and sync when you're back online. Card payments fall back to your reader's offline mode where your processor supports it.
How do tips work?
Guests tip on the pay screen or reader. You set tip pooling and tip-out rules by role once, Tallo does the math every shift, and staff see their tips in the Tallo Staff app with same-night payout available.
Do you add a surcharge to card payments?
Not unless you turn it on. Surcharging and dual pricing are off by default. In the US, if you enable them, Tallo applies your state's rules — including where they aren't allowed — and prints the required disclosure. In Australia, card surcharging ended on 1 October 2026 under Reserve Bank rules, so it stays off.
Can you move us off Toast or Square?
Yes. We migrate your menu, modifiers and staff in 48 hours, train your team, and help you time the switch around your current contract.
